Springtime Stripes

Stripes — a classic styling strategy for the petite of proportion, to trend the eye vertically. This mostly applies to stripes that are oriented up and down. They do work that effect when oriented horizontally, too, in some cases, as I show below. I also think it’s wise to keep your stripes narrow in general, so that they don’t come across as color blocking, which is usually not a good idea for a petite frame (although there are exceptions to that, too).

A perfectly slouchy three-quarter length tee with excellent bells and whistles: petite-friendly v-neck styling, a tie-finish at the bottom, and unexpected (and very cool) shirring on the shoulders.

This sleeveless tie-bottom linen tee is groovy, too, and will take you straight into summertime stripes.

Crisp and polished looking navy and white seersucker pants. I’m generally not a fan of pockets at the side seams, so I especially appreciate the pockets at the front to keep the look nice and lean.

The criss-cross construction at the back of this blouse is just delightful. The front is perfectly great, too.

I think the stripe-y flourish at the bottom of this dress is so smart. Thin horizontal stripes in close proximity to each other like these create an elongating “ladder effect”. This dress is about 34 1/8″ long from the shoulder, which is around knee-length for close to 5′ me.

I find the fit of Ann Taylor’s essential shirt a little magical – it manages to be both slim and drape-y at the same time, and it’s very flattering because of it.

A timeless, easy to wear dress that rocks the “ladder effect”, with tons of styling options. The length is about 41″ in petite sizing, which makes it midi length for someone like me. Great with a jean jacket on top or a sweater tied around the shoulders or waist. Or, pop in some color (any color) with a skinny belt.

A very elegant and sophisticated striped blouse that can be worn for work or play. The slight bell at the sleeves is just right for petite proportions.

A well-done, super-soft, very French girl striped tee of the wardrobe staple kind.
